Can I DIY my 820 Visa application? Is it hard or am I better off using a migration agent or a lawyer?

Answer: There are thousands of people that have self-lodged partner visa applications and have achieved successful outcomes. There have been people that have self-lodged applications and have had refusals or extended processing times due to multiple RFI’s (Requests for Further Information). 

Unfortunately, you will have certain persons (designed for their own interest) structuring arguments that claim preparing and lodging a partner visa requires a noble price for science or the equivalent knowledge to build the atom bomb.
